Long Distance Adventure Cyclist
Had a call from Ron about an hour ago. I think the loneliness and miles and miles of nothing really gets to him. I sense that he has some bleak moments and wondering what he is doing!! But then he ‘picks himself up’ and gets on with the task at hand. The test for him has not been so much a physical one but a mental one – T’s been tough.
He stayed next to the road in his tent last night but is in a backpackers tonight. He is in his bed generally by 6pm so the nights are long but he tries to up and packed and gone by 6am.
So as I mentioned before he is now in Aborigines country so all a little uncertain. He only cycled 75ks today – just couldn’t go on but still has 150ks of the desolate Null arbor plains to go which he will do in two sessions – probably sleeping on the side of the road as what lies ahead is uncertain – there should be a roadhouse, but not certain. So he has to carry 6 bottles of water and food and this extra weight makes it tough.
He will have cycled 1,600ks across the Null arbor Plain when he finishes it in 2 days time! That it no mean feat! It is tough, desolate, monotonous and lonely. He is missing home and all of you! And sends ‘all the best’ to you all and urges you to keep the blog going and keep the support for hospice going as well.
He has burnt his lip in the sun quite badly but other than that nothing serious. He is sleeping and eating well.
The weather recently has been hot but with quite a bit of rain – this makes getting the tent dry a little tough. He cycled part of the day yesterday with his shirt off – such a show-off, I know – and he got quite a lot of reactions from cars and trucks driving by!
There is a cold front on the way.
Ron still has over 1000 ks to go to get to Adelaide where he will have to fly out to Sydney as he is running out of time.
But what an incredible journey of tenacity and courage! We are all so proud of you Ron!
Still no coms so it is rather frustrating but should have some in a few days time – lets hope so.
