Long Distance Adventure Cyclist
At least we are getting regular calls from Ron now – although having cel phone connection and photographs would be first prize for everyone. Anyway, he found another call box and called – it was round 10.30 am our time but he was getting ready to turn in for the day! He had cycled through to Smoky Bay – a distance of 120 kilometers. He had his first puncture! Plus he saw a really huge snake on the road which he naturally stopped to look at! He has been pretty upset by the dead camels he has seen on the side of the road!! No, not kangaroos but wild camels! They were brought into Oz at the turn of the century by some Afghanis – and they are now wild! He also saw a dead wombat (sp!) – he said that this is a very beautiful animal. they get hit by speeding trucks. So I guess every country has it’s problems!
Anyway, Smoky Bay is a pristine little coastal village – so pretty but with very few people – it is so far off the beaten track that it doesn’t attract too many visitors. He has pitched his tent on the beach and experienced the most awesome sunset. So he is starting to really enjoy this epic adventure!
He plans to cycle to Streaky Bay tomorrow and then heads for Elliston, then the following day he should reach Port Lincoln. And let’s see what happens after that.
At least we know where our boy is. He said every time he has a tough ride, he thinks of the carers at hospice – battling with terminal patients then he forgets about his own aches and pains! So, keep the blog going – he is really looking forward to reading all the messages – and don’t forget about hospice.
Ron says: bye-bye now and all the best’.
